Featured in the August 2007 issue of Chamber Music America Magazine, flutist and composer Andrea La Rose is making waves in the New York music scene and beyond. Her pride and joy since 2002 has been her work as a flutist/composer/board member with the punk-classical antagonists known as Anti-Social Music, who in December 2005 released their debut cd Anti-Social Music Sings the Great American Songbook. Her playing on her piece breakbeat from that cd was singled out for praise by quite a few people: "bristles with energy" (Dusted's Mark Medwin), "righteous" (pataphysics-lab.com/dotdotdot), "grabbed my attention and deservingly so" (thephiLLer.com's PhiLL Ramey), "fascinating" (onefinalnote.com's David Dupont). As a flutist, she's also worked with the Choro Ensemble, pop-lullaby crafter a million billion, the little funk combo Zilo Groove & Nouvelle Soul, shoegazer band Inlets, open instrumentation anarchists ThingNY, and sound experimentalist John Jannone. She's been heard on cd with World/Inferno Friendship Society and His Name Is Alive, and live with Mohair Timewarp and her own improv trio with Bernadette Speach and Jeffrey Schanzer, baj. New Music Connoisseur thought the 2003 premiere of her opera scene advertising changed my life was "pure theater" and "a fun divertissement." Her beginning-band piece hey! was commissioned by an elementary school band in Massapequa Park, NY, and she has won MTC Creative Connections awards for the premiere of seven ways to sunday and for participating in Anti-Social Music's Composers' Brunch at The House on Quincy Street in Washington, DC. In 2007, she was an associate artist at the Atlantic Center for the Arts. She made her first foray into writing for theater in March 2008, composing and performing original music for puppet-theater group Lone Wolf Tribe's production, BRIDE, for which she received a CAP grant from the American Music Center. Her next big project in 2009 will be recording her suite grunt work for the avant-garde for the next Anti-Social Music album The Future of Everything. "Prolific and an expert performer, she's bouncing among a dozen good ideas, and wherever she lands will doubtless cause merriment, consternation, insight, and possibly the End of Civilization As We Know It.' |
